Hamster First Aid Kit – What does a complete hamster first aid kit look like?

Do not be selfish! You have one for yourself, right? Well, your little hamster needs one too. You don’t have to buy it, you can put together a few things and voilà…a homemade first aid kit.

Here is a short list of some of the things you should have in your first aid kit:

  • First and foremost, you should always have your veterinarian’s phone number and address handy. Make sure the vet you know treats hamsters because even if the hamster is commonly kept as a pet, there are not many vets for them.
  • Adhesive strips of various sizes and shapes to put on your hamster’s wound. You can use adhesive bandages to bandage your hamster’s injured leg (broken bones, sprained ankle) by wrapping it tightly.
  • Syringes and dropper to administer various types of medications
  • Antiseptic, antibiotic and antihistamine pills and lotions. You should only use what your vet recommended. Remember that what can be great for you when you have a scratch can be deadly for your hamster because it has a habit of grooming itself – continually licking its body.
  • Cotton-tipped swabs to clean the wound or even your hamster’s ears (you should try to clean your hamster only if he is sick, otherwise he doesn’t need you because he does a great job)
  • Scissors and nail clippers
  • A lucky bag so you never need the first aid kit!

Feel free to add to this first aid kit everything you need that is useful and necessary for the health of your hamster.

Now that your first aid kit is up and running, there are a few things you can keep in mind.

1. Make sure that the first aid kit is not hidden in a corner of the room. It should be as close to the hamster’s cage as possible. When you need it, you should be able to have it at hand.

2. Make sure everyone in your family knows where the first aid kit is and how to use it.

3. If you have young children, make sure the first aid kit is out of their reach.

4. Make sure you take all precautionary methods before treating your sick hamster: wear gloves and wash your hands a couple of times after handling the hamster.
