Popular programs for making calls from your computer

For many Internet users, a computer is the best Internet phone available today.

There are many different ways to make calls from your computer over the Internet. Since other computers can be called for free, the first thing you want to know is whether the person you want to call has access to a computer connected to the Internet.

Computer-to-computer calls with popular programs:

Services like Skype and Yahoo Messenger will allow you to talk from your computer to any other computer in the world, for free. You can ‘chat’ by text message and make video calls. All you need to do is download and install a program and finally register a user for any of those services. The other computer must have the same program installed and the person you want to talk to must also register a user.

Calling a phone number from your computer with popular programs:

Using the same services mentioned above, like Skype or Yahoo Messenger, you can make paid calls from your computer to phone numbers practically anywhere in the world. You will find different rates per minute depending on where you want to call. Destinations can be listed by country, area, or city.

There are plans for regular callers that offer unlimited calls to phone numbers for fixed monthly rates. The price of each plan will depend on the country or group of countries included in that plan. Some companies offer special plans with unlimited calls to a group of countries, a country or just one city.

Unlimited calling plans are not available for calls around the world and are not easy to find for Asia in general, Southeast Asia in particular, certain African destinations, or some destinations in Central and South America. It all depends on what is available in the geographic destination of your call (what is there in regards to phone companies, the Internet, and how the destinations use a technology called voip). In India and Mexico, for example, providers encounter particular circumstances and can only offer certain destinations.

Some destinations (for example, certain countries in Central America) do not have fixed rate plans. You can still make cheap calls to those places, but always paying by the minute.

Receive calls from a phone number on your computer with popular programs:

With Skype or Yahoo Messenger you have the option of having a phone number anywhere in the world. When someone calls that number, the call rings on your computer. That way someone can call you from a remote location for the price of a local call. That’s very important: the person calling you doesn’t have to pay for an international call. For example, you are going to study at Bond University in Australia and your mother lives in New Delhi, India. You subscribe to a phone number in New Delhi and your computer rings every time that number is called.

Call from your web browser:

Some providers offer the ability to call from their websites so that you do not need to install any programs. However, you must still register a user to make a call. Gizmo is well known in this field, but has suspended the registration of new users.

Friendcaller will allow you to call anywhere in the US and other countries from their website at competitive rates.

Another option is Callingamerica, which offers a service to be used only within the US, but has been reported to be accessible from outside the US.

Finally, we can mention Youtele from India. It allows you to make calls directly from its website, but credits can only be purchased in certain cities in India.

Something we can do if those services don’t work well for us:

The Internet does not work the same in all countries and regions, so sometimes things can go wrong.

If for some reason Skype or Yahoo Messenger (or any other service you’ve tried) doesn’t allow you to make calls from your computer to a phone, you can add a special service like Gtalk-to-Voip (Gtalk2voip) to subscribe. to a phone number anywhere in the world and use it from popular chat programs: Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger.
