Summer is a very fun and busy time for children. Since there is no school, many would be attending camp, visiting the beach or just playing in the sun. But sometimes the heat can be intense, and parents worry that their children are spending too much time in the sun. There is a possibility of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke.

But don’t worry, follow these simple ways for kids to beat the heat:

Serve healthy and refreshing snacks

Summer time can seem like the perfect time to binge on junk food. It’s tempting to go out and have a burger and fries, order pizza for dinner, or munch on fries and some salsa. While this is not a bad thing from time to time, try to prepare healthy snacks for the children. Hydrating fruits like kiwis, cantaloupes, or watermelons are great choices for a hot, refreshing afternoon snack!

Keep the little ones hydrated

Drinking 8 glasses of water every day is essential, what more when it’s hot? Make sure your children are well hydrated. Constantly offer refreshing drinks to help replenish fluids lost through sweating, whether it’s water, fresh fruit juices, coconut water, or even buttermilk!

Keep them indoors on extremely hot days.

Just because you’re indoors doesn’t mean the summer fun has to end! When the weather is extremely hot, choose to stay indoors – there are many fun activities you and your children can enjoy inside your home! You can create an indoor obstacle course, make delicious and refreshing snacks together (popsicles, smoothies and the like) or just enjoy a family movie, popcorn and all.

It’s also great for keeping little ones out of direct sunlight, especially during peak hours between 12 noon and 4 p.m.

Have fun with plants!

Houseplants do more than just decorate your home: they help regulate the humidity of the air in a room, which can be refreshing to the feeling (as they help decrease feelings of dampness and heaviness). Teach your kids all about plants and when the weather gets cooler, have them plant their own seeds in the garden!

That they wear the right clothes

The lighter the clothing, the cooler the body will feel. Choose linen, double gauze, and other breathable materials for clothing to keep your kids cooler in the heat.
