Baptism in the Holy Spirit, Smith Wigglesworth speaks in tongues

Smith Wigglesworth came to a point in his walk with God where he said, “I can rest no more, I must have these tongues.” A woman in the faith responded, “Brother Wigglesworth, it’s not tongues you need but baptism. If you let God baptize you, the other one will be fine.” When she got up and put her hands on Smith, the fire of God fell. Wigglesworth yelled, “The fire is falling down.” Wigglesworth said of the experience:

“Then I saw that God had purified me. It seemed to me that God gave me a new vision, and I saw a perfect being within me with an open mouth, saying: ‘Clean! Clean! Clean!’ When I began to repeat it I found myself speaking in other tongues. The joy was so great that when I got to pronouncing it my tongue failed me, and I began to worship God in other tongues as the Spirit gave me to speak.”

In fact, as it was on the day of Pentecost when the Spirit of the Lord came like fire and filled all who had gathered together to pray, so the Spirit of God fills hungry hearts today. Being filled with the Holy Spirit, they not only began to speak, but they spoke “with other tongues” (Acts 2:4). These were the languages of all the nations under heaven. It happened supernaturally in that those who spoke were only Galileans (v. 4-8). However, all the nationalities of the world came together to hear the gospel of God in their mother tongue.

God still sends messengers today to communicate in the language of the people. God still fills his servants to overflowing with his Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit still snap, crackle, and explode with power as they did two thousand years ago! However, before God can fill you, you need to empty yourself, empty yourself, sin, and perhaps your denominationalism and doctrine. Only as you decrease can God come and increase in your life.

God has placed “diversities of tongues” in His Church to edify the sinner and the saint (1 Cor. 12:28). Since God put “tongues” in the church, not the devil, it is imperative that we discover their usefulness and purpose. The devil knows the powerful utility and purpose of tongues. This is precisely the reason why Satan has sought to remove the tongues of the Church.
