San Pedro is the main center of commerce for Ambergris Caye Belize. It is a major global tourist destination and has the highest concentration of tourist facilities and accommodation in Belize. Everything from hotels to dive shops offers everything you need to enjoy this beautiful Caribbean island. The year-round population of 4,000 will double during the peak tourist season, but you won’t see crowded beaches and facilities.
The town consists of small colored houses on sandy streets immediately adjacent to the clear blue sea. The sea breeze and trade winds provide all the necessary cooling. Small hotels, guest houses, and condominiums are scattered throughout the city. The most common modern conveniences are readily available. You have a choice of accommodations from very modest to frontline, most of which are just a short walk from the beach.
If you want a relaxed and comfortable Caribbean vacation in shorts and T-shirts at a fairly modest price, then the town of San Pedro is the place. Many people feel that the fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving couldn’t be better anywhere else. If you have a Type A personality, we suggest looking elsewhere. The locals are mostly Mexican but they speak English quite well. The northern tip of Ambergris Caye is separated from Mexico by a narrow channel that was reportedly carved by the Mayans hundreds of years ago.
Unlike Cancun with plastic package tours, visitors to San Pedro have more freedom to roam and enjoy paradise. Ambergris Caye is a long, skinny island about 25 miles long and is the largest of Belize’s more than 200 islands. Getting your means by using a water taxi from Belize City or by flying into the only airport that is just on the east side of the city. The primary mode of mechanical transportation is via golf cart. There are few cars and trucks on the island, but that is slowly changing, and not for the better.
So if you are interested in a relaxing vacation in paradise, you may want to consider visiting San Pedro and Ambergris Caye. Bring only shorts and t-shirts, even shoes and sandals are options. You may love the island so much that you consider moving to Belize.
