Tips for installing a TV wall mount

-Once you’ve purchased the mount you need for your TV and have all the hardware available, you’re ready to go. A good idea is to have a friend or family member help with the installation. A couple of clues.

-Find where the studs are on the wall and mark them accordingly. Mark the spot and measure from the ceiling to the floor to the center of the wall. Once you’re happy with the location, you can also mark where the screw holes will be.

-If you are using a flat TV wall mount, you may need to purchase the screws for installation. Make sure they are long screws, they make the mount much more secure.

If you want to hide all the cables and wiring, but you don’t have a cable jack on the wall, you can put up a shelf or something similar to hide them. The best way I’ve heard is to buy a crown molding. You paint the trim the same color as your wall. Simply bundle the wires together, lay the trim over the top, and put a few nails in the top, middle, and bottom. If you need to move the TV, it will be easy to disassemble and will not leave the wall damaged. Always check and make sure everything feels firm and sturdy. It’s worth spending time and money to make sure your TV doesn’t fall off the wall.

This is an FYI that there is a voluntary association that you should be aware of when buying a TV. VESA (which stands for The Video Electronics Standards Association) has set standards for the entire electronics industry, including TV mounts. The regulation is fairly easy to understand, the TV and TV mounts marked “VESA mount compatible” will fit together. If you have purchased a non-compliant TV and a non-compliant wall mount, you will need to purchase an adapter plate separately.
