It’s time to smile again: defeat job burnout

Those who have experienced mild to severe job burnout know the amount of suffering involved. When people are suffering from fatigue, depression, insomnia, anxiety, and also develop conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol due to immense work burnout, it is time they were quickly addressed.

What is burnout?
Job burnout affects many people. This is a distinctive type of stress that is directly related to your occupation. When someone has job burnout, they suffer from exhaustion: physical, mental and emotional. This stress comes from many factors, from the work environment to the workload. People also have feelings of inadequacy and have doubts about their value in the workplace.

If you think you may be experiencing job burnout, some questions to ask yourself are:
Do you have difficulty getting up and a nervous feeling when you get ready for work?
Do you get easily irritated with the people you work with or with your clients?

Is your energy level low?

Are you unmotivated?

Are your sleeping habits abnormal?

Do you find yourself worried about work often?

Have you developed any new symptoms for you, such as anxiety, weight gain, or high blood pressure?

Burnout can disguise itself as many symptoms, so it’s important to frequently reflect on your work and your feelings about what you do each day.

What are the causes?
Many work-related stressors can cause burnout, and a combination of several can make it even more intense. Some factors that can cause job burnout are: negative workplace dynamics, work overload, mismatched job placements, lack of control, poor leadership and negative coworkers, work-life imbalance, and more .

Yes, it can be fixed!

Burnout can be quite debilitating, but it is solvable. Some things you can do to help with job burnout are:

Think about the specific stressors that make you feel this way. Are you a coworker? Your boss? Your workload? Once you find out, you can develop a plan to fix the problems.

If you have concerns about your job that are causing you to experience burnout, you may want to talk to your boss. Perhaps your supervisor can help you through this difficult time by finding solutions for you.

Have an attitude adjustment. Maybe it’s because you’ve become negative about certain work-related issues and you just need to think more positively and think of ways you can change your perspective.

Talk to a friend or a counselor about how you feel. A good friend or trusted therapist can offer a listening ear and possible solutions for you.

Think of a change. Do you want to continue doing this particular job, or would seeking other employment help you?

Exercise every day, even if it’s for fifteen minutes.

Remember, you are responsible for your own happiness. If you are very unhappy with your job and honestly feel that you have given “everything” to make things better for you, then you have the ability to make a change. Many people who have experienced job burnout have found that making a career change, business location change, or any type of change helps immensely.
