Light makes specks bigger on pearlescent granite countertops

I was recently speaking with a consumer who wanted larger specks on the surface of his granite countertop. I find it interesting how little people know about stone, granite, marble, slate, you name it! This particular person wanted to have pearly blue granite countertops installed in his kitchen and wanted as large flecks as possible in the stone. I tried to explain to the lady that a stone like the one she had chosen was natural and came out the way it did.

I also explained to the lady that the flecks in the stone would actually give the impression, under certain light conditions, of growing in size. As light reflects off the pearlescent markings within the stone, they have a kind of shine, causing an increase in the appearance of the size of the flecks. Of course, I also explained to the lady that there are other forms of stone that offer this kind of light effect. Starlight Black, a man-made stone formed from quartzite has glass, mirror flecks within it, which also give off a glow when light shines on them.

Unfortunately this raised the question of whether the flecks found in quartz stone could be made larger by default, but I did say that the vendors who supply this type of stone for countertops use pretty much the same machinery to make it and therefore , generally forms the same throughout. Of course, there are still batches where the specks are larger, while there are also batches where the specks are smaller, but this is just due to the way they form when formed.

My advice is to go to a showroom and get a strong torch light then try the different types of stone to get the glow that works best for you. Lights can always be mounted in kitchen areas, where they best create a glow on the stone surface. Alternatively, you can have a window positioned to the right, to catch the sun’s rays!

Regardless of how you achieve the shimmer effect on your stone, in my opinion the shimmer effect is a much better way to increase the size of the blemishes rather than having larger blemishes. Another factor to consider is that if you insist on larger flecks, the price of the stone to be obtained could also increase!
