It started as a sweet idea from Grandpa to write some “wise words” about marriage for his grandson. That list became a blog. Davidson’s flamboyant and conversational style quickly attracted a following. Fans everywhere urged Davidson to put it all together in one book. And here it is – Marriage advice for my grandson, Joel.

“How to be a husband that your wife won’t throw out the window in the middle of the night.” Written in the same wry prose, Martial Advice is first and foremost fun to read. The grandfather tells his grandson the “secrets” to stay married, the best way to answer the dreaded questions and to always “listen twice as much as he talks.” (The reason we have two ears and only one mouth has finally been explained. Who knew, right?)

Marital Advice is a quick read: at just 152, it’s a great way to pass the time waiting for a plane, a doctor’s appointment, or your wife shopping. (ha ha) Personally, I’m not a big shopper. But, I still get it! I have been married for 26 years and I must admit that everything in the book is perfect. Davidson tells it like it is and does it in such a way that even when he tells his grandson (men in general) to keep her mouth shut, he’s funny.

This book is just fun! The clerk must provide a copy of this book when the couple purchases their marriage license. Davidson’s candid advice, often ‘you don’t have to get it to get it’, is hilarious. What makes it so funny is that it’s true. Marital Advice is one of those little books that is passed around and reread many times. Yes, some of the ideas and language can be a bit “old school”, but that’s Grandparents for you… right? So just chalk it up to a generation gap and apply the advice. Believe it or not, grandparents have a wisdom that only comes with time and experience.

If you enjoy a quick and fun read, you’ll love Marital Advice. It’s an adventure down the rabbit hole of marriage that will have you nodding and laughing out loud. Davidson shares humorous real-world advice. He makes fun of himself, telling funny stories from his own marriage. Being such a short read, this would make a good travel book. Whether you have a flight, bus ride, doctor’s appointment, etc., Marital Advice will make your waiting time fly by with smiles and laughter. I highly recommend it!
