The winter season can be quite harsh, some might even consider it the toughest season of the year depending on where you live. That harshness is especially true for living things, such as people, animals, and plants. However, it could also be quite true for non-living things that are exposed to the weather. If you’re not careful with some items left outside, it’s likely that the winter season has had a particularly heavy and damaging effect on it.

Your outdoor air conditioning unit is certainly no exception to items that could be severely affected by the weather during the winter. And since your air conditioning unit is a very valuable appliance for you, you will certainly want to be able to prepare it for the upcoming winter season. Being able to do that becomes even more important to you if you live in an area that is prone to getting or accumulating up to several feet of snow during the winter months, or if your place is surrounded by mostly tall trees.

However, there are steps you can take to prepare your outdoor air conditioner for the onset of cold weather. Since there really is no other way around it, because your air conditioning is a necessity, then you have to. This means that you should start mulching it for the fall and the following are the steps to do it correctly.

  • The first thing to do is measure the height, depth, and width of your air conditioning unit. Do this with the use of a standard tape measure. After taking the measurements, you should write down but you should also round the figures you obtained to the nearest whole number.
  • Now you need to figure out how much coverage you would need for the entire air conditioning unit. To calculate the quantity, add the width of the top of the unit with the sum of the length of each side. The resulting figure is the total amount of cover you will use.
  • As a cover for the air conditioning unit, it would be a good choice if you select burlap as the cover material. This will help allow for much better air movement in and around the drive parts and greatly reduces any chance of the drive rusting due to exposure to moisture. The burlaps should be wrapped over the top of the unit and then around its base. To secure the ends, use florist’s wire or twist ties.
  • To make sure the burlap is secured in place, use twine to wrap it around a few times and then, to make sure it doesn’t come loose at any point, tie the ends together in a knot. Then you would have secured and prepared your outdoor air conditioning unit for the winter season.
