Dobok is the Korean term for the Taekwondo uniform. It should be worn at all times during practice and more especially during tournaments and sparring games.

Etymology of the term

The term dobok originated from two Korean terms: “do”, which refers to the word path, and “bok”, which refers to clothing. Combined, it meant dress code.

Types of Taekwondo uniform

There are two types of Dobok, namely the white Dobok and the black Dobok. The white dobok is typically worn by students who are distinguished by rank based on the color of their belt. The black dobok, on the other hand, is worn by the student who has successfully reached the rank of black belt, but there are also cases where a black ornament is made on the collar of the white dobok just to distinguish the rank the student has managed to achieve.

Similarity to other martial arts uniforms

The Taekwondo uniform closely resembles other types of uniforms, mainly Karate and Judo. However, a closer look at these uniforms will reveal certain unique differences in them.

The similarities with these martial arts uniforms prove one thing, the fact that almost all oriental martial arts uniforms can have their origin in judo. “Gi” is the martial arts term for the judo uniform that all other martial arts uniforms may have been emblazoned on. It was developed by Kano Jigoro, who was also the first person to use distinctive colors to distinguish the abilities of his students.

Characteristics of the Dobok

The dobok is commonly depicted as a white top garment with wide sleeves that is paired with long, wide white pants that are tied with colored belts indicating a person’s rank and abilities.

Currently, the dobok used is patterned over the Korean hanbok, which generally has V-neck jackets, but others who wish to war a “gi” with a double-breasted jacket in the front are still accepted. Before entering a tournament, be sure to check their rules regarding the proper dobok accepted so you don’t run into technical issues during the start of the actual tournament.

Purpose of wearing the Taekwondo uniform

There are many reasons why people would want to wear a dobok, but according to the Encyclopedia of Tae-kwon-do, these are the main reasons why it is necessary to wear a dobok during training and tournaments.

1. The wearer acquires pride and dignity when the mother wears the dobok. She reminds him of the principles of Taekwondo and the virtues and values that come along with the knowledge that she may have learned from her teacher.

2. Distinguishes the rank of a particular student. Based on the color of the belt he or she wears, it easily identifies the rank and skill that particular individual has achieved.
