Top 3 Secrets to Writing the Best Nursing Cover Letter

Nursing is one of the most rewarding careers you can think of. It is well paid, prestigious and, perhaps along with teaching, the most generous of occupations. You want to make sure that you can land the nursing job of your dreams. So, once you’ve completed your education and have your degree, it’s time to post your resume. One of the best ways to get a job interview and therefore a job, is through your cover letter. Here are the top three tips for writing your nursing cover letter:

1. Write clearly, professionally and simply. Your nursing cover letter is the first impression your future employer has of you. Be sure to use an easy-to-read font like New Times Roman. Use short paragraphs instead of one big one: fragmented text is easier to read. Do not use jargon, clichés or acronyms. Be sure to convey your ideas clearly. Your communication skills are very important.

2. Direct it to the right person. Find out who the key person doing the hiring is. Don’t just send it off to HR and hope it lands on the right person’s desk. Discover. Get his name. Make a few phone calls to a secretary if necessary. You want your nursing resume and cover letter to reach the right person.

3. Follow up. Never send your resume and wait by your phone for it to ring. If you want that job, you have to get that job. Follow up with a courteous phone call about a week later. You could even send another resume and cover letter, but I think a phone call is best.

Good luck!
