Being a member of a minority should not be a reason to stop achieving your goals. In addition to the government’s effort to increase the budget for minority education, interested groups and institutions provide free scholarships for people in service. It’s good to know some free scholarship applications so you’re aware of important deadlines and requirements.

Scholarship for African Americans
Despite their supposed freedom from racism in the 1960s, African Americans still suffered from the effects of stereotyping and the weakening of their spirit to excel in school. Scholarships like the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Scholarships have been trying to alleviate the problem for years. Interested applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. In addition, they must have documents to support their financial status. Annually, the grant awards about 450 grants to qualified applicants. There are scholarships that award money to the winners. Such grants include the Sallie Mae Fund American Dream Scholarship, which awards between $500 and $5,000; the Abercrombie & Fitch Scholarship Program which awards $3,000 each year and the Malcolm X Scholarship for Exceptional Courage which awards $4,000.

scholarships for native americans
Native American students with exceptional academic records may also apply for tribal funds provided by the government and some private institutions. The Allogan Slagle Scholarship is a famous program started by American Indian Affairs for students who trace their roots among the 561 recognized native tribes. Interested applicants can also apply for federally sponsored scholarships sponsored by the Department of Education. Other options include state, minority and corporate scholarships and organization scholarships for Native Americans.

asian scholarships
Students with Asian affiliations who are about to enter their first year have the opportunity to join the Mitsuyuki Yonemura Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship needs documents such as proof of JACL membership, a personal statement, letter of recommendation, official transcripts, and a resume. Students who are in grades 9-12 with writing skills can also enter the OCA-KFC National Essay Contest. This contest requires applicants to write a composed essay with 800-1000 words. Members of the Chinese community can also apply for scholarships offered by the Organization of Chinese Americans, Inc. (OCA). To date, there are at least eight qualified scholars receiving $2,000 each.

Scholarships for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT)
It’s good to have a survey about colleges that have an LGBT Resource Center if you’re gay and looking for educational funding and scholarships. Examples of these scholarships include the SOLGA Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize Competition, the Deaf Queer Youth Scholarship, the Lee Dubin Scholarship Fund, and the Live Out Loud Annual Scholarship, which awards cash prizes and space at a university.

Multiracial or multicultural scholarships
There are also grants for multiracial people. Some of them include the Bureau of Indian Affairs Scholarships, the James E. Burr Multiracial Minority Scholarship, the Multiracial Student Scholarship Fund, and the Ohio University Multicultural Scholarships.
