Skateboarding gives him a certain image. Skate videos show hard music. Cyclists suffer brutal falls and get up again. When a cyclist performs a perfect trick, he just walks away from the spot.

I’m not a skateboarder. I tried it a couple of times. It was too hard for me to do it. That is why I am writing this article.

A friend and I were having a deep conversation about which sport is the hardest to master. He is also a doctor and he is one of the smartest guys I know. He mentioned skateboarding. I laughed at first.

He went on to talk about the extreme coordination required to do the tricks. We talked a bit about the neurology involved. And after thinking about it, I have to agree. Now, I don’t claim to know everything about all sports, but I do know that skateboarding is very demanding on coordination, balance, and skill.

If you’ve ever sat and watched the kids at the skate park, you may have noticed the difficulty in the tricks they perform.

Let’s talk a little bit about what’s going on with these tricks. Balance comes through ears, location, and the ability to know where we are in space. The brain gives us this ability and it is done automatically.

Some people have better coordination than others. This is a natural gift for them. This gift of balance and coordination can be learned.

The average person can stand on one leg for 30 seconds. Trying this out, you will find that the higher you are, the more difficult it is. Closing your eyes reduces the time to 20 seconds.

I would like to know how long an experienced skateboarder can stand with his eyes closed. A sports doctor at the Olympics told me that Chinese gymnasts had a hard time standing for 20 seconds with their eyes closed.

One last comment, skaters are athletes. An athlete needs the ability to function properly. This is directly related to the functioning of the brain and neurology. This is directly related to nutrition. It’s rare to see an overweight kid skating. It is as unlikely as an older person to start practicing this sport.

Similarly, smoking, drugs and alcohol directly affect the nervous system. They destroy brain cells and affect the ability to coordinate all functions.

To seriously compete in this sport, you must maintain a superior and healthy lifestyle. I would say even more than most sports, because as I mentioned skateboarding is one of the hardest sports to master.
